#ERP all the way! #Repost @obsessivelyeverafter • • • • • • Los Angeles, California If your therapist tells you to hold up a stop sign when you’ve had a thought or tries to make meaning out of your thoughts, run fast and run FARRRR 🏃🏼‍♀️ (and don’t look back) . A therapist may say they specialize in CBT, but not understand that certain elements of CBT are ~not~ applied to OCD. Thought-stopping is one of them. We cannot control what thoughts pop into our mind and the more we try to stop them, the more of them we have. . Obsessions are meaningless. They don’t need paid attention to. If you are seeing a talk therapist who tries to make meaning out of the thoughts, you are paying a therapist to perform a compulsion in their office. Don’t do it! Analyzing thoughts is a compulsion. It signals to the brain that they’re dangerous and the brain produces more. . Reassurance is another compulsion that reinforces the obsessions. The OCD brain cannot connect to logic so reassurance is useless. The only thing it does is call attention to your thoughts, which makes your brain produce more of them because it thinks they are important. If your therapist repeatedly reassures you that your thoughts will never come true, they are making the OCD worse. . Thought neutralization is highly compulsive! Thoughts are not good or bad. They are quite simply thoughts. When we try and replace a “bad” thought with a “good” thought, we are resisting the “bad” thought. Resistance fuels obsessions. Mindfulness is the real work here. . If you’re looking for OCD treatment, ask questions! Do your research. Whether or not you have panic attacks or anxiety, water is something everyone needs and should be drinking way way more than you probably are. I remember growing up and always hearing that fact that goes something along the lines of our bodies are made up of 1/3 water. Now, luckily for me I’ve always loved water. I drink a lot of it. ⁣ ⁣ Sometimes people will worry that I’m drinking too much (which yes you can actually over hydrate who knew) so always listen and pay attention to your body but chances are you could stand to drink a lot more than you are. I as a petite (5 ft 4) female drinks between 2-3 liters every single day. There’s this funny meme that says something to the effect of “I’m so hydrated my pee is clear.” Funny but true you can tell a lot by your urine. It should be more pale than dark.⁣ ⁣ There is also the other common thought that a lot of times when you think you are hungry you are actually just super thirsty. It’s always a good idea and it will help increase your water consumption if before you eat you drink some water.⁣ ⁣ Now with all that said, there is a direct correlation to anxiety and water. In a test done with the connection to how water can have an impact on anxiety and depression levels, the lowest level of water drinking (< 2 glasses/d) compared with reference group (≥ 5 glasses/d) doubled the risk of depression and anxiety (P < 0.0001). That is pretty amazing that the test group that drank less than 2 glasses of water a day had more than double anxiety and depression risk than those that drank more than.⁣ ⁣ The great thing is that you can easily mix up your water if you find it too boring. For example, I always start my morning (I’ll get more into my overall morning ritual in a coming chapter) with warm lemon water. ⁣ ⁣ Lemon water has its own benefits for your health and the lemon adds a little extra flavor to water. You can also make your own at home spa water with fruits such as berries or cucumber. ⁣ ⁣ Another favorite of mine is adding some fresh mint to an afternoon cup of water, so refreshing. You can even count your tea as water too! There should be no excuses to not be getting more water in your day. ⁣ ⁣

Being vulnerable about my anxiety initially both on social media + in my everyday life was not the easiest thing to do. How many people use the term PTSD also known as Post-traumatic stress disorder? We are now experiencing trauma, and experience it in different ways. Some examples are inour neighborhoods, on social media, homes, schools, work, church etc... Events from childhood, adult hood and things we have experienced in our daily lives can be traumatic. Being on social media, you cannot avoid the traumatic events that have been happening since the beginning of 2020; from covid-19 stopping life as we know it with social distancing and being away from friends or family members, untimely deaths from covid19, the shootings death of Ahmad and Breonna and recent death of George. The above events will manifest as trauma in some way, shape or form either from the actual event or surrounding events. We are not robots, so we must address the issues we may develop in order to ensure that it does not change who we are as individuals.
