#tbt to my last completed SEALFit event in 2014: the 20X challenge.
A lot can change in 5 years. I was in a very different place in life. Fired from my first training job, depressed, stuck in that post-college “where do I go from here?” Funk, trying to forge my identity and find my tribe. I was in an shape guy, who accomplished a lot, but all I saw myself was, was as a failure.
The best way to remedy that is to take the massive action needed to prove yourself wrong. And the best way to do that is to remind yourself who the fuck you are.
I did that through this 20 hour team building event in Allentown. I would occasionally make trips up there from Baltimore to practice skills for this event with a rag tag group of CrossFitters at CrossFit Honor.
We learned a lot in that day: how to build teamwork through shared suffering, how to win in our minds before we stepped out into the fray, attention to detail, stimulus control, micro goals, visualization, positive self talk, and most importantly: that it’s never about you.
You accomplish more as a unit than as an island and remember to fall back on the people who share your values, your heart, your principles and have your best interests in mind. We’re all in this together. Our abundance is our strength and our compassion isn’t our weakness.
We all have the capacity to do incredible things and we’re all going to fall away from that from time to time. Don’t forget what you can do and take the steps to prove it to yourself. You owe it to the world.
