Mantra, a meditation technique to practice focus:
Often people ask how I got started with meditation. For me, I began reading eastern philosophy and came across the technique of mantra, or single-pointed focus on a repetitive sound.
The key here is "single-pointed focus". Using a mantra can teach you a focus that can translate into other areas of your life. For example, train to focus on the present moment, on reading material, or in a conversation. Use it to transform old ways of thinking into new, constructive thoughts.
Mantra can be a syllable, a word, or a phrase that you repeat. Once you've trained a bit, the mantra starts to fall away and you simply rest in the peace and love created by a clear, calm mind. Ahh, bliss!
Lately, I have been using mantra to reprogram new stories into my mind to promote healing. When cooking dinner, or cleaning, telling myself, "I am healing. I am whole. We are all in harmony," and repeat that phrase over and over.
One day, I'll maintain equilibrium, till then, mantras... Shanti, shanti.
Do you use a mantra? How else do you meditate?
