Chapter 2 (Part 3 of 3): Are you ready for this? Apparently Not! Soon after starting the hike, the incline started to increase and I started to see why hiking shoes would have been helpful. The mud also started to get deeper and, in some areas, it was shoe-deep. The mud was not only deep but also very slippery so the poles were very necessary to keep balance. I almost fell a couple of times (see video). Not long into it, my arm grazed one of the poison ivies we had been warned about and it started to itch. Yep, this was going great 😊. But none of that really bothered me that much. What affected me the most from the hike was the altitude. Clearly, the gorillas were not called mountain gorillas for nothing. We were going at a pretty fast clip and being at an altitude of about 3000m (~9000 ft), I was feeling short of breath with the exertion. After about 30 mins, I started to adjust to it but one of the other guys from my group was not so fortunate. We had to stop for him several times. He was sweating profusely and really struggling. After about 1 hour of trekking we had to stop for about 10 mins for him to recover. At least, that gave everyone a chance to take in the view (see pic). I was starting to wonder if he was going to be able to continue. The hike was getting more difficult and it was more climbing than hiking in some spots, but somehow we managed for another 2 hours. We had gotten pretty high up the volcano. Patrick, our trek guide, stopped the group and said that the gorillas were not at the spot where they normally were so we were going to have to hike for another 5 hours! I really wanted to see the gorillas, but I also had a business dinner that night which I would most likely not be able to make. And I was leaving the morning of the next day so what if we did not find them that day? What to do? What happened next on next Sunday’s post (Chapter 3)! #mountaingorillas #gorilla #rwanda #kigali #africa #nature #naturelovers #naturephotography #naturaleza #protectnature #animals #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #wildlifelovers #explorenature #nationalpark #savetheplanet #savetheearth

Chapter 2 (Part 2 of 3): Are you ready for this? Apparently Not! They divided everyone into groups of ~8 people. My group had 5 Americans and 2 Canadians and our assigned guide was Patrick. In our group briefing, he told us to stay 7 meters away from the gorillas and if they charge, not to panic, to step back and act submissive. Noted! So we were ready to go. We had to go back in the vehicles and get to the start of the trail. We were hiking the Karisimbi volcano. Karisimbi is the highest volcano at Volcanoes National Park and the 11th highest mountain of Africa. We finally got to the start point and it was an odd location as it was agricultural land which surrounded the volcano. There was a group of about 8 children sitting on a small hill right by us and they could not stop smiling and waving. Their joy was contagious, so I smiled and waved back wholeheartedly, and we did that for a few seconds. Sometimes in poorer countries, kids waving at tourists is what happens before they ask for money, but that was not the case here. From what I could tell, they were just excited to see us - I could feel their energy. Our guide gathered us and offered everyone very cool trekking poles which I was glad I accepted! (see pic) and we were off to start our trek up the volcano through the Runaranyoni trail. At the beginning of the hike, we encountered a beautiful bamboo forest (see pics). Soon after, the trail turned narrow, dense and bushy, so we had to walk behind each other. Shortly into it, we encountered a local resident – a huge earthwarm. The guide lifted it and I jumped at the chance to hold it (see video – that’s me holding it!). It was just like the worms I use to encounter growing up in my garden, just 10 times bigger! Chapter 2 (Part 1 of 3): Are you ready for this? Apparently Not! At 7 o’clock, we arrived at the base camp to hike up to look for the gorillas. The base camp is a holding station where people are paired up with their trek guides before starting their hike. Very quickly, I noticed how decked out everybody was for this hike except for me! Everyone had serious hiking boots, hiking pants, gaiters, long sleeve shirts and most had thermal jackets with some also having trekking poles. Me – I had gym shoes, jeans and a t-shirt on! All of a sudden, a woman arrived at the base camp and she had Converse shoes on so I thought – “I am not the only one!” 😊. That did not last long. Soon after arriving, she got into a very public argument with her tour company as the boots that she was supposed to get were not there. Eventually, she got her boots and I was once again the only sneaker wearer… I started to wonder if I was over my head with this trek. I was in Rwanda for a nature conservation conference and had not planned for a hike to see the gorillas and reserved last minute. Although I felt like I had missed the memo, it was kind of late now. I had brought an extra t-shirt so I put that on for the cold and rented a set of gaiters at the strong recommendation of Vincent, my tour driver. I kept wondering, how bad could it be? I was about to find out :). The Rwandan government keeps a tight control on the number of people visiting the gorillas so only about 96 people are allowed each day. In Rwanda, the cost of a permit per person to see the gorillas is $1500. I have been to many national parks to visit other endangered species and this was by far the most I have ever paid, but it was worth it in order to support preservation of this species. This is definitely a one in a lifetime experience. Faces of the Rushegura Gorillas. For the second year in a row, I had the privilege of spending an hour of time with this gorilla family in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. It’s impossible not to feel a connection when watching the facial expressions and mannerisms of these close relatives whom share 98% of our DNA. Visiting these gentle creatures in their natural environment is not only exhilarating, but directly impacts their conservation as by purchasing permits to visit them, you’re not only buying a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, you’re providing local economic incentive for maintaining their protection. This baby gorilla might have been my favorite! 🦍 🥰 Toss up between him and the teenage drama king (swipe for videos). What amazed me most about my mountain gorilla encounter in Rwanda was just how relaxed these wondrous creatures are around humans. We were so close, it was such a privilege 🙏🏽 Which speaks volumes for the conservation efforts here. The silver back didn’t deign to get up for our hour visit sadly (last pic) - which might be just as well because apparently he has a propensity for touching people - totally safe but I don’t know if I was ready for that! . . #traveldeeper #rwanda #visitrwanda #gorillatrekking #mountaingorillas #gorillas #adventuretravel #authenticallywild #oogorillasnest #amazingplaces #passionpassport #abmtravelbug #travelawesome #thisisafrica #africatravel #wildlifeprotection #wildlifeofinstagram #mytinyatlas #adventuregirl #sheisnotlost #welltraveled #bucketlisttravel

We had such an incredible day trekking with the mountain gorillas that we decided it needed its own post. The day started with a welcome dance from some women from the local village, then a trek into the Impenetrable Forest of Uganda. We had an hour following this family of 13 gorillas and even got to watch the head male silverback for a while. It was one of the most amazing things I think we’ve done yet! Then in the afternoon we visited an orphanage for children who had been abandoned or lost their parents to HIV. It was a very touching experience. So far Uganda has absolutely amazed us. Would definitely recommend anyone who is interested to visit! #mountaingorillas #penetratingtheimprenetrableforest #littleangelscommunity

AFRICA ASKING EUROPE. This project is about asking people in Africa one question: There is something about Europe you would like to know? Usually when we travel, we ask local people how they live, how they do normal things in life.. we make a lot of questions.. so the idea of this project come to me: ask local people if they are curious about something the place I come from.. if they want to know something about Europe? Patrick and Arthur are friends. We spent a nice afternoon in Bujumbura. Patrick is a swimming trainer. But he told me he didn’t go to swim to the lake Tanganyika because there are crocodiles and hippos. When I asked him if there is anything he would like to know about Europe, our conversation continues like this: Patrick: Where are you going after Burundi? Me: I am going to Rwanda, to track the mountain gorillas. Patrick: Why are you doing that? Mountain gorillas are extremely closely related to humans, so they share susceptibility to many human diseases for which they have no immunity. So you have to be SUPER careful not to cough or sneeze anywhere near them. And if you’re sick, you’re supposed to forfeit your permit — the Uganda Wildlife Authority has long feared that a single tourist who doesn’t disclose a cold or food poisoning could wipe out an entire gorilla family. #gorilla #mountaingorilla #gorillas #mountaingorillas #gorillatrekking #gorillatracking #gorillatrek #bwindi #bwindiimpenetrableforest #africanwildlife #africanwildlifephotography #uganda #uganda🇺🇬 #visituganda #traveluganda #eastafrica #backpackingafrica #safari #africatravel #amazingafrica #solofemaletraveler #travel #travelblogger #naturephotography

Current mood. . Early morning mist hangs low on the Virungas casting an eerie, mysterious shield over the forest. On the way up the mountain, through a potato field, we encounter what the ranger says are buffalo hoof prints in the mud. Suddenly the danger of the wild seems real. The realization only adds to the sense of adventure. As the sun begins to cut through the mist and dense foliage, we reach the family we have come to visit. One of the few remaining mountain gorillas in the world. We have clearly invaded their territory. The dominant silverback lets us know by posturing as if he is going to swing on a vine and the ranger gestures that we should crouch into submission. He doesn’t swing, but shakes the foliage violently enough that we are showered with debris. Hearts still beating rapidly after a bombastic introduction, we become aware of baby gorillas running playfully around us at knee height now that we are standing again. The ranger whispers a warning to play back at one’s own peril for the entire family would view any interaction as a threat. Because the gorillas are an endangered species, the gun slinging on his shoulder is not intended for them. We would have to find another way out of an altercation with the gorillas. Thankfully, it doesn’t come to that. But, before we know it, our hour is over. We have to climb down the mountain. Still one of the best travel experiences. . #MountainGorillas #GorillasintheMist #Travel #VirungaMountains #Rwanda #Safari #Adventure #DianFossey #TravelisFataltoIgnorance #SabyinyoSilverbackLodge #SilverbackGorillas #GovernorsCampCollection #WildlifeConservation

Bright & Early (In the Search for the Mountain Gorillas - Part 1) Vincent, the tour company driver, came to pick me up bright an early at my hotel in Kigali, Rwanda. I never thought I would be thankful for being jetlagged, but getting up a 4am for a 4:30am departure was not all that hard. The jetlag woke me an hour earlier, just in time to watch Nadal win the US Open and his 19th Grand Slam. It will be a good day. It did not take long before we were in the outskirts of Kigali and going uphill. The city lights were a distant view (see pic). But what I would see next was unexpected: speed cameras and, soon after, policemen with speed guns. Sure enough, Vincent got a ticket and they gave him an e-ticket on the spot. Who knew that they would be so sophisticated with tickets!? It just felt like being in NYC with cops filling their ticket quota. Tourist cars are probably a primary target. We stopped along the way to get something to eat and thankfully there were a couple of places opened. All they had was bread and doughnuts. Vincent suggested I get the donuts, so I did 😊. As we went further, I started to see people walking on the side of the street, some carrying jugs of water – of the latter, all were women (see pic). I asked Vincent what they could be carrying. I was surprised to learn that they were carrying water from a lake several miles downhill. Water issues don’t seem to go away even in countries that are doing relatively well. The contrast between this basic water access deficiency and the high sophistication of ticket issuance and the perfectly paved roads was startling. At 7 o’clock, we arrived at the base camp to hike up to look for the gorillas. I immediately started to wonder what I had gotten myself into!! I have so many things to say, it’s just hard to know where to start. From the calls and chats about the departure time, to the magnificent and exceptional tour guiding by Emmanuel, to the unbelievable mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National park, and the excitement of meeting and connecting with other people, was an outstanding experience. I’m not going to forget the spectacular views including the clouds moving over the volcanoes. The mountain gorilla trekking was surely a “once in a lifetime experience” , but I wish to revisit. Seeing these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat is superbly fun. We spent a couple of hours bushwhacking through the jungle with our tracking guides, getting snagged, tumbling down the mud, getting super thirsty, in order to keep up with the #mountaingorillas. I mean, it was not for the faint of heart but when we got close to the “Mafunzo gorilla family” which is the one we visited, it was all worth it. I was impressed how the Silverback shows authority and wants to protect the whole family. (when we approached, the silverback beat his chest and we were requested to stop taking pictures and sitting down, and the tour guide used a sound to show the gorillas that there’s peace) ☺️ I was also excited to see #VisitRwanda, the baby gorilla named by “ @tonyadamsofficial A.KA Mr Arsenal” along with other gorilla familly members including Uhiriwe, Pasika, Ubuhamya and the youngest silverback Mafunzo. All in all, the mountain gorilla trekking was a miraculous experience. I mean, it’s really amazing how you struggle while going up to see the gorillas (you really have to concentrate on where you’re stepping), and definitely rewarding after you see them in their habitat. Every time I got tired, I told myself “Faby, you came here to experience this, stay the course and hard-work pays.”.. hmm.. it really paid, as I got an hour to see them with my naked eyes, took lots of pictures with my phone and had time to see how they truly relate to humans 🦍😄. They are just lovely 👌 Thanks RDB and @visitrwanda_now for the great work you’re doing in gorilla conservation. #temberaurwanda25 #ShalomSafaris #VisitRwanda #gorillatrekking
