It took me quite a while before I felt ready to tell me story. My family were aware of what had happened and slowly my friends started to become aware but to the majority of people I hid everything for a long time. I was so worried about how I’d be perceived once they knew and the last thing I wanted was a pity party. It took me a long time to realise that sharing my story was in fact brave, courageous and more than anything, it was important! I started to write a blog and the response I received was incredible. So many people got in touch to tell me how much they related and how hearing my story had helped them. Knowing that I was managing to help other people made the worries I’d had about sharing my story reduce. Yesterday I realised I’ve been holding onto a lot, a lot of mistakes I felt I’d made and even those mistakes you make up yourself, the scenarios you over think that actually never happen. I’m reading Untamed by @glennondoyle (you gotta do it!) and this hit me hard. Happiness was always my goal. The pursuit of it meant that I felt shame and disappointment through all of the years that I felt anything but happy. I thought everyone else was happy and that I was weird, tainted, because there was a black cloud that was never far from view. I tried to escape, numb and hide from difficult feelings and in doing so I just felt more pain and eventually I had a breakdown when my mind and body said ‘ENOUGH’. - Learning to sit alongside the rough stuff has been the most important work I’ve done. It’s where my growth lay. When I examined the dark cloud, I saw that it was full of pain that I had buried since my youth. I got honest with myself, I made changes, I learned who, or what would hurt me and I learned how to let go. The sun did not shine every day, but when it did, I felt it freely without the fear of it leaving because I had learned that clouds will pass and that I can survive if I allow myself to work through the darkness. #YouAreNotAlone

You only have to look around to see how many people fear making a mistake or fear failure. Maybe it's you? I get it, I really do as I too use to fear those things, but not anymore, actually not for a long time now because I discovered making mistakes is a normal part of life. Being diagnosed with bipolar has been a learning experience for me. I am an addict in recovery and I have never felt a high as wonderful and addicting as mania. I spent a lot of years chasing it. It felt like I had access to a super power of living in a euphoric technicolor dream world 🌎 🌈. Depression would hit me like a wave and I would crash to live to only eat and sleep. I would sink. Heaven turned into hell. What goes up must come down. Mania is temporary and only leaves me feeling broken and alone. I no longer chase it. It’s been two years since I got sober and stopped chasing mania. I have been successfully episode free and living a healthy lifestyle in the #thrivetribe I am blessed for my recovery, my supportive loved ones, my sponsor and my mental health professionals who have helped me stay strong 💪🏻. Thanks Joe, mom and dad for helping me and loving me and reading my blog about my journey!! I now go to therapy weekly and take my meds daily and thrive. I believe mental health should be emphasized in society like phsyical health is. We are told to go to the gym and drink water and eat our greens but rarely do we hear to take care of our minds. 40 million adults are affected by anxiety and 16 million by severe depression and those are just the stats for those who have been diagnosed. Many silently suffer. I did suffer silently for years with an ED and anxiety. The consequences of not getting help led to trauma, self medicating and worsening / exacerbated symptoms of bipolar. I now speak freely and openly about my mental health and reach out when I struggle. I work through the icky ish to better myself and become more resilient. I am a warrior. As mental health awareness month ends I conclude with these 2 picture that best describe bipolar depression and mania. In this cognitive distortion, an individual tends to create a filter in their minds of the positive aspects of a situation, and focus exclusively on the negatives. In this faulty thought pattern, the individual tends to see their glass as half empty, rather than half full in any given situation. ~ For e.g., while giving a presentation in class, one student keeps his head down, while the others actively listen and engage with the teacher. The teacher dwells on that one student who had his head down the entire class, doubting their presentation and their teaching skill, completely ignoring the engagement of all the other students. ~ The typical dialogue of someone who uses mental filtering looks somewhat like: "My nose is so big, I look like a freak, I'm so ugly" OR "I couldn't talk to that girl properly, I'm so stupid" ~ Mental filtering is mostly seen in, or can worsen generalised anxiety and depression. These patterns lead people to form a skewed sense of reality and prevents them from coping with emotions and internal conflicts. ~ To counter mental filtering, it is helpful to shift focus towards the broader and more positive evidence, that contradicts or discounts the negative detail.
